How Entrepreneurs Stay Relevant in the Age of AI

March 17, 20265 min read

“If artificial intelligence can do most of what you do… what are you actually selling?”

I want to tell you about a conversation I had with a client — a sharp, successful real estate entrepreneur who had just come from a conference where someone on stage declared that AI would replace most sales and client-management functions within five years.

She came to our session visibly unsettled. Not panicked. But unsettled in a way that felt deeper than market anxiety. "If AI can do what I do," she said, "then what am I actually selling?"

It is one of the most important questions I have heard in years. And I think the answer is everything.

What AI Actually Does And What It Doesn't

Let's be honest about what AI is good at. It is extraordinarily good at pattern recognition. It can analyze massive amounts of data faster than any human. It can generate content, predict behavior, automate follow-up, and optimize systems in ways that would have seemed like science fiction a decade ago.

In real estate, this means AI can help with listing descriptions, market analysis, lead scoring, and scheduling. These are real efficiencies. They are not going away and fighting them is a losing strategy.

But here is what AI cannot do: it cannot sit with someone in the most significant financial decision of their life and make them feel genuinely understood. It cannot intuit that the reason a client keeps hesitating isn't about the price... it's about fear. It cannot hold the complexity of a human being who is simultaneously excited and grieving, ambitious and terrified, certain and lost.

That is the work. And that work has never been more valuable.

The Meaning-Maker's Advantage

Viktor Frankl wrote that the last of the human freedoms is the ability to choose your response to any given set of circumstances. AI does not have this freedom. It responds based on training data and optimization functions. It doesn't choose. It computes.

Humans choose. And in an era where computation is becoming nearly free, the ability to help another human being make meaning to see their situation clearly, to feel what is true for them, to move from confusion to clarity is becoming the rarest and most valuable skill in any relationship-based profession.

This is not a consolation prize for people who "can't keep up" with technology. This is the actual edge. And the entrepreneurs I see thriving in the AI era are not the ones who are best at using AI tools. They are the ones who are deepest in their human capacity... the ones who have done the work to understand themselves, their clients, and the emotional architecture of trust and decision-making.

NLP as a Human Technology

One of the reasons I bring NLP into my coaching work is that it is, in some ways, a human answer to the same question AI is trying to solve: how do you understand and influence human behavior?

Where AI uses data, NLP uses language and pattern recognition but applied at the individual, relational level. It asks: what is this person actually communicating beneath the words they are using? What internal model of the world is driving their decisions? What shift in language or framing would open up a different set of choices for them?

These are not questions AI can answer about the specific human being sitting in front of you. These are questions that require presence, attunement, and genuine curiosity about another person's inner life.

In a world where AI is handling more and more of the transactional layer, the relational layer is not just nice to have. It is the product.

What the Next Decade Rewards

The entrepreneurs I believe will define the next decade in relationship-based industries are not the most automated. They are the most human.

They are the ones who invest in understanding their own psychology not because it's self-indulgent, but because self-awareness is the foundation of client awareness. You cannot read the room if you have never learned to read yourself.

They are the ones who develop genuine expertise in the emotional dimensions of their work not just the technical ones. Who understand why people make the decisions they make. Who can help a client move from fear to clarity, from confusion to commitment, not by pushing harder but by listening better.

They are the ones who build a recognizable voice, a point of view, a philosophy about what they believe and why it matters. Not because branding is important though it is but because in an era where content is infinitely generatable, genuine perspective is the only thing that cannot be replicated.

My Answer to Her Question

I told my client that what she was selling was not transaction management. It was not market expertise, though she had plenty of that. It was not even service, though her service was exceptional.

What she was selling was the experience of being deeply understood at a moment when that matters enormously and being guided through it by someone who had earned the right to guide, not because of a credential, but because of who she had become through years of real work on herself and with her clients.

That cannot be outsourced. It cannot be automated. And it becomes more valuable not less every time a new AI tool enters the room.

The question is not whether AI will change your industry. It will. The question is whether you are investing as seriously in your human depth as you are in your technological literacy.
